Discovery Channel's Greatest American # 10: Franklin Delano Roosevelt
My least favorite Roosevelt breaks into the Top Ten.
Here's why I don't think FDR belongs on the list:
1. His disastrous economic policies deepened the Great Depression.
2. He ordered the breakup of the Bonus Marchers.
3. He refused to accept Jewish refugees.
4. He lied repeatedly about our entry into World War II, essentially forcing us to wait to be attacked.
5. He used Lend-Lease with the Brits, but employed Here-Take with Josef Stalin.
6. He gave away Eastern Europe at Yalta.
7. He ignored the fact that his administration was riddled with Communists.
8. He interned the Japanese, but let Nazi-lover Joe Kennedy run free.
9. He repeatedly lied about his disability. Had he been elected with it openly known, imagine the advances in the public's view of the handicapped.
10. He refused to follow Washington's precedent and retire after two terms.
11. He didn't let Harry Truman know about the A-bomb until he had to use it.
12. He clung to power when his poor health compromised his nation's interest.
Since he served 4 terms as President, secured a near-permanent Democrat political majority, and led the U.S. to victory in World War II, however, he's there. I'm surprised he's not higher on the list, frankly.
