Discovery Channel's Greatest American # 1: Ronald Reagan

I must say I was surprised by the selection of Ronald Reagan as the Greatest American.

There is a case to be made for this, however.

It was Ronald Reagan who overtook a foundering and gravely weakened nation from the worst President in American history, Jimmy Carter. Reagan restored Americans' faith in their country, rebuilt the military Carter had all but destroyed, and through an amazing feat of diplomatic skill and military nerve dealt a mortal blow to the Soviet Union which has made the United States the world's sole superpower, the only rival to Imperial Rome in world history.

Ronaldus Magnus is certainly a great American, and arguably the greatest.

He excelled as an athlete, as an actor (you can argue he was a B-lister, but he worked an awful lot for one), as an orator, and as a politician. He embodied many aspects of America as represented by other great Americans on this list.

He was as bold in economic policy as FDR.

He had Bill Clinton's charisma and charm.

He took his responsibilities as seriously as Washington, and strove ever to set the example.

He was as much a liberator as Lincoln or Dubya.

More than anyone else, Ronald Reagan understood America, as a nation, a people, an idea. No other American has had as firm a grasp on the very notion of America than Ronald Wilson Reagan.
