The World's Greatest Comic Book Covers
Here's one Pat over at Brainster's should love: just got my copy of "44 Years of Fantastic Four" DVD-ROM and thought I'd celebrate by sharing my favorite 10 covers from the "World's Greatest Comic Magazine". (Click on the covers to enlarge).
10. FF Annual 2001
Anything that could do this to Galactus is one bad mamma jamma, indeed.
9. FF # 280
John Byrne's run on FF was quite extraordinary and nearly as influential as Stan & Jack's. This is a favorite cover from the Byrne era.
8. FF # 39
I'm a sucker for Dr. Doom covers. Here's one that's been copied ever since Kirby pulled it off his drawing board.
7. FF # 220
And isn't this the way we always think of them? Heading out into the vast reaches of space with nary a clue as to what they're going to do when they get there. Thus the perils of listening to somebody who calls himself "Mr. Fantastic".
6. FF # 191
This is a creative and thought-provoking way of dealing with the fact that since the Fantastic Four don't work for anyone, they can't possibly resign.
5. FF # 85
Love the pulp feel of this cover. Classic 30s/40s kind of image.
4. FF # 14
Love the composition here---Namor's got Sue out of the way, and is ready to reckon with her protectors.
3. FF # 48
Nobody does suspense like The King. When these folks are looking anxious about something, it's got to be enormous.
2.FF # 258
I'm a sucker for a good Dr. Doom cover, and this one is excellent. Of COURSE Doom would want to destroy the very comic we're about to read.
1. FF # 1
This is the mack daddy of comic book covers for me. It's been imitated hundreds of times, with good reason---it's an amazing cover from The King himself.

2 Comments:
Hail to the King, true believer! Kirby was a titan among men. We'll not see his like again.
Good stuff! I always liked the cover to FF #36, although I could never quite figure out what Medusa's hair was attached to, and how Ben got his hands through the window.
