Patty Does It Again

You might not know who Patty Griffin is. You might not even care who Patty Griffin is. But I've listened to her music since 1997. My range, voice and style are very similar to hers so she's the natural favorite to listen to (and belt out) in the car. And most of her songs are fairly uncomplicated to play on the guitar. More than that, she's a great songwriter whose talent lies in minimalistic, intimate realism. And while she can brood a bit too much at times, most of her work is intenesely thoughtful without being saccharine or overwrought. (Even still, Tef won't listen to her; her style of music is a bit too "folk" for his ear.)

She has a new album coming out in February, "Children Running Through". Judging by the pre-realease single, "Heavenly Day", this album's going to be repeating on the iPod for a long, long while. Listen to it. I dare you not to fall in love. I'm even singing it for my best friend's wedding.

You would probably like a lot of the music on the public radio station for the University of Pennsylvania, WXPN (www.xpn.org). You can listen online. Sometimes they get too twangy for my taste, but I am sure that's why I've heard of Patty Griffin. When Dar Williams isn't on a PC kick some of her music is cool.
Interestingly enough, when the local modern rock station's format got switched, after some unemployed staff kept it going online for a few months WXPN picked it up for a few weeknights. The usual DJ is the former program director--who was the program director for an even better (IMO) modern rock station that I listened to when I was in college and got its format switched my senior year. (There are wayyy too many hip-hop stations in Philadelphia these days.) So now I get to hear some of my favorite "old" music and discover some new music that probably wouldn't get much exposure on the remaining area rock station.
But anyway, thought you might like to check out 'XPN. I think they still have a folk program Sunday night. And the kids' show is hilarious sometimes! :)

It's so interesting that I'm as conservative as I am and like some of the music I like. Most "folk" is crap, though, I must admit.

On the other side of the aisle (in my defense) the lack of good "Godly", introspective, well-crafted music is so vast that it creates a noise that souinds a lot like sssslllluuuurrrrpppp that is, a loud sucking sound. There's just very little of it that is quality.

*sigh*

I should highlight the other artists I enjoy from time to time as well. Music is such a huge passion of mine and I almost never talk about it. It's like it's too sacred or something. Hmmm...

And I agree wholeheartedly -- hip-hop must die.
