We Can't Make You Happy

That's the single, salient, and clear truth regarding white and black Americans.

We can't make you happy.

It's about time we stopped trying. It's killing black Americans, as every attempt by people who didn't have anything to do with slavery or segregation or oppression find new and more destructive ways to absolve their misplaced guilt at the expense of black families and communities.

The truth is that to succeed in America the recipe is the same for everybody: work hard, get an education, don't break the law, and have a family. Anyone who does these things will come out ahead, making it easier still for their children to succeed.

My great-grandfather was a bricklayer who came to this country in 1910 from Portugal. My grandfather was a bricklayer. My father was a bricklayer. I work in a white-collar gig in corporate America. Each generation did a bit better on the economic success scale than the previous one, because each of us absorbed that simple plan.

The tragedy of civil rights in this country is that racist Democrats tried to keep black Americans on the plantation, beholden to white politicians rather than white plantation owners. It is a remarkable historical catastrophe that so many embraced their oppressors so. We are still waiting for the black Moses who will lead so many suffering people from Democrat Egypt, where they subsist but do not thrive. The inability of the GOP to remind Americans of the terrible history of the Democrat Party in this country on the subject of race, a history stretching back centuries and containing most of the horrors today's Democrat plutocrats evince to abhor, is awful to be sure, but not quite as awful as what Democrats have knowingly done to the black family, which not so long ago was by all accounts even stronger and more stable than the white family.

Sadly, as The Wrong Reverend Jeremiah Wright shows, even the black churches have hitched their wagons not to Christian morality, but to Democrat political machines, closing yet another doorway to a better life upon those who need it most.

This will not end until black Americans realize the simple truth: we can't make you happy. Only you can make you happy.

And you can take that from a third-generation American who is quite happy.

Great article ("I refuse to be a victim"--I'd die of shock if people around me started saying that!), and great commentary. To borrow the title of a mediocre self-help book, "Happiness Is an Inside Job."
