Us Magazine Becomes You Magazine

Lots of subscriptions being cancelled over the Us Weekly hatchet job on Sarah Palin.

I cancelled mine as soon as I saw the cover. I received the magazine yesterday and tossed it in the trash.

It is hilarious to watch these media types when it begins to dawn on them that the echo chamber in which they breathe in their rarified ideological air is not in fact the entire world, and that whenever they decide to propagandize on behalf of their favorite Leftist candidates and causes they immediately hemhorrhage market share.

It wasn't the brightest idea...and the exec who approved the agenda...probably doesn't last past December. You have to figure a end-total loss of 20,000 buyers (between the check-out stand and subscriptions). You figure $60 a year that it ran (for subscription) and $120 for the check-out stand price...and you lost a fair chunk of money for a stupid decision.

But this is kinda like the CBS idea of keeping Katie Couric around until the elections...and losing money weekly off her deal.

That's a great point. Split the difference between checkout and subscriptions, take the 20,000 sustained loss and it probably costs Us Weekly $1,800,000 in circulation revenue alone.

Since the real money is made on advertising, though, the real fear they have is how much ad revenue loss that $1.8 MM drives through dropped circulation (the basis for page rates) and brand damage.

Better hope the Kos Kidz are forthcoming with funding---maybe George Soros doesn't need those pectoral implants after all.
