When Did the Golden Age of Comics End?
Now we'll get some controversy.
Some say All-Star Comics 57, which was the last appearance of the Justice Society of America before the book went to a Western format.
Some say it was when Captain America Comics got weird.
Both are evidence of a sea change in comics, as the superhero comics of the Golden Age died off.
I think that's way to genre-focused, though.
When you talk about what ended the glory days of comic books, when talented creators could basically do whatever they chose to do, the answer is simple: the publishing of Tales from the Crypt 46, the last of the EC Comics horror line before the Kefauver Congressional Hearings created the Comics Code Authority.
A shockwave hit the industry. The EC Comics line attracted the finest talent and was a major inroad for comics to reach an audience beyond the early teen years in demographic make-up. The death of the EC horrow line was the beginning of a long dark age for adult comics.
