A Comment on Comments

Vigilis e-mailed recently looking for the 411 on comments. We'd started to get slammed with Comments spam after Wizbang! picked up a post last week, so I disable Comments while waiting for it to either blow over or to find a good solution to the problem. In the meantime, I was posting comments received by e-mail with permission as updates to the original posts.

I'm going to go ahead and turn open comments back on. If we get slammed by spam, I'll need to shut them down again.

If you have a suggestion as to the best solution for comments spam, we'd love to hear it---please include in comments to this post.

The options I'm aware of have their ups and downs:

1. Require registration for comments
2. Run a script requiring pattern identification prior to publishing comments
3. Require approval of a moderator before posting any comment
4. Eliminate anonymous comments
5. Open comments on a post-by-post basis
