BlogStats: Mean Visits By Day

WordGirl and I put out fresh content for MoltenThought every day, barring only unforseen technical issues. As we try to fine tune our content, it is useful to look at blog statistics by day of the week to spot trends:

Just another manic Monday at MoltenThought

Larger version.

As you can see, our biggest day is Monday---that's when we tend to get the most visits.

There are a couple of strategies we might employ based on this information.

We could attempt to target posts which are likely to resonate with a wider audience on Mondays, when links might be easier to come by. Since we typically have several pages' worth of content a day, and our average visitor stays for less than 5 minutes, this might be a reasonable way to grow audience.

Alternately, the longer, more thoughtful posts which tend to generate comments from regular readers might be best suited for slower days like Saturday, when they are easily found (fewer posts) and when the visits tend to be a little longer.

Maybe we ought to switch up content on Mondays and Saturdays. We tend to do short political posts interspersed with longer religious and personal posts. Maybe the political stuff would fit better on Mondays and the latter on Saturdays. Perhaps we need to up cultural content on the weekends, bringing back movie reviews and/or giving WG free rein to snark on all things fashion.

The nice thing about keeping and using blog statistics is that you can not only use the data to formulate strategies for growing audience and increasing reader satisfaction, but when strategies are implemented, you can compare the before and after change data and see if they made a difference.

Bloggers who aren't engaging in some detailed analysis of their traffic are missing valuable clues to reaching a wider audience.
