Will Conservatives Support Giuliani

Terence Jeffrey of Human Events doesn't think so:

Apply the Giuliani Continuum to fundamental issues such as marriage and the right to life, and where does it lead?

Not where conservatives want America to be.

Rudy Giuliani’s observation about the “continuum” running from graffiti to murder was quoted in a piece in the winter edition of City Journal by Steven Malanga. The title of Malanga’s piece neatly encapsulates his argument: “Yes, Rudy is a Conservative — and an electable one at that.”

I believe Malanga is wrong on both counts. Rudy is neither conservative, nor electable — at least, not as a Republican presidential candidate.

I'm not sure Jeffrey's right.

The single biggest issue of our time is the War on Terror. I think Giuliani would be tough to beat on that issue after his 9/11 performance; indeed, he's the only Republican we can be absolutely certain will not forget that day.

I would prefer a GOP presidential candidate who is conservative across-the-board, particularly on life issues given the once-in-our-lifetime opportunity to fix the courts by replacing socialist dinosaurs with people who can read and comprehend the Constitution.

If I can't have that (and no candidate in the current field is a Reaganesque conservative, I'll support the candidate who'll best ensure mushroom clouds don't appear over American cities.

I'm sure other conservatives feel the same way.

And having had to support Bush the Elder and Bob Dole, it's not even a novel situation for true conservatives to be in.

When the alternative is a doctrinaire leftist like Hillary Rodham or Barack Hussein Obame, Giuliani looks might good to me.

Teflon, you've pretty much stated how I feel. I happened to be in the car when Sean Hannity was interviewing Giuliani on his radio program, and Hannity was trying to hammer him on the life issues, particularly abortion, and it was SO DIFFICULT for Giuliani to respond. But the thought of HRC on the ballot makes me ill. And the thought that people would vote for her just b/c she's a woman makes me even more ill.
