Why the Catholic Church Doesn't Split

This article rather missed the point.

The Catholic Church does not split at the rate the Protestants do because schism results in the denial of sacraments and the risk of one's salvation. The Church also recognizes one authority, the Pope. If you become a schismatic, you follow someone other than that recognized authority, a huge disadvantage.

Infallible authority exercised with restraint is the key to the Church's two millennia reign from an organizational point of view. Christ keeping his promise that the gates of Hell would not prevail against her is of course the true and full explanation.
