So Much for the Permanent GOP Majority
Let the recriminations begin.
Republicans lost because:
a. We didn't listen to those realpolitik genius like Jimmy Baker and Brent Scrowcroft on Middle East policy.
b. We embraced "compassionate conservatism".
c. We didn't embrace "compassionate conservatism" enough.
d. We weren't zealous enough.
e. We're sleazy.
f. We're stupid.
g. All of the above.
h. None of the above.
i. We didn't really lose.
I'm for h. I simply think Americans didn't like the way things were going and wanted to try something new. Since we showed no signs of changing anything, they went with Democrats.
Listening to voters is probably a good idea if you want to win elections and you're unwilling to lead them.

Teflon, the advanced planning for Rumsfeld's departure, was only on a contingency basis (if Congress turned over in the recent election) and was made with minority leadership.
Two questions come immediately to mind. What did the Republicans get in that deal? We heard Pelosi say before the election that "articles of impeachment" would not be brought against Bush, if she became the majority leader.
The second question is not why such extortion was served up by the party of lawyers (because they can), but what else has certainly been agreed to in their devil's bargain (perhaps Immigration and Global Warming deals)?
Conservatives should be concerned about the extortionate "influence" the lawyer-establishment already exercises. At some point, corrupting influence becomes a lock, and the appearance of two major parties in competition with each other becomes a masquerade.
Both of our major parties should have expired years ago on merit. Apparently, only the party of Newt Gingrich did, and the surviving party has been orchestrating the appearance of being two, viable competitors. - Vigilis, the independent
