The Prison Victims the Left Has Little Time For

Perhaps because they're Americans, or perhaps because the victims are overwhelmingly nonviolent.

No inmate should be sentenced to a life of perpetual abuse behind bars. Any judge banging his gavel after sentencing a man to a life of repeated homosexual rape prior to dying of AIDS would be driven from the bench.

And yet the lack of competent prison administration and adequate prison space leads to just such death sentences.

Many of these men will be released from prison one day. How will men so brutalized return rehabilitated in any meaningful way to live among us again?

I favor stiff sentences and truth-in-sentencing, particularly for violent and repeat offenders.

Beating, maiming, and raping men until they're driven to suicide is not part of any law-and-order platform considered by anyone but the Marquis de Sade.

And yet Charles Colson and other men of God who try to help end this abuse are sneered at by the same folks so concerned for the dignity of the terrorists at Gitmo.
