From "Famous Last Words: Fond Farewells, Deathbed Diatribes, and Exclamations Upon Expiration," compiled by Ray Robinson, Workman Publishing 2003.
"This is a mortal wound. Take care of that pistol. It is undischarged and still cocked. It might go off and do harm. I did not intend to fire at him."
-- Alexander Hamilton
Founding Father Hamilton's life ebbed away on a New Jersey field in 1804 after he lost a duel with political nemesis Aaron Burr. Burr challenged Hamilton to the duel after the latter's denunciation of him helped ruin his bid for the New York governorship.
